Boosts Herbal Processing with westrup technology

When Kräuterwelt, operated by co-owners Carsten Graf and Robin Vogt, decided to modernize their herbal processing capabilities, they were looking for a partner who could deliver both technical expertise and a complete processing solution. Their main objective was to establish a highly efficient line tailored primarily for valerian, while also maintaining the flexibility to process a variety of other fine seeds and delicate herbs.

the scope

The collaboration with Westrup Germany began in February of 2025, when the first discussions took place to define the requirements of the new processing line. By early April, the contract was signed, and detailed planning and engineering started immediately. Thanks to efficient coordination and continuous communication between both teams, the entire line was installed and successfully commissioned in just a little over six months.

A key factor in the project’s success was the strong cooperation between Kräuterwelt and Westrup throughout the entire process.

From the very beginning, the cooperation worked extremely well. We held online meetings every two weeks, which helped us stay aligned and resolve questions quickly,” says Carsten Graf.

the new line

The newly installed processing line combines several specialized machines designed to ensure gentle handling, precise cleaning, and high product purity.

Kräuterwelt chose to start the line with a brushing machine. The product then moves through a screen cleaner, where precisely selected sieves remove unwanted particles and ensure accurate grading — regardless of product size.

Next, the material passes through an indented cylinder for further separation before entering the final quality stages.
The 3U optical sorter uses advanced optical technology to remove discoloured roots, foreign materials, and other imperfections, ensuring a consistent, high-quality product of the valarian root, thus separating organic material from non-organic material such as plastics, stones, and metals.

the results

Throughout the process, elevators and transport belts maintain a smooth, continuous product flow. At the end of the line, the cleaned and sorted material is transferred to the bagging station for efficient packing and preparation for storage or shipment.

A central filter system with full piping supports the entire installation, managing dust extraction and air circulation to maintain a clean, safe, and controlled processing environment.

And with that, a complete processing line was built specifically to the company’s needs.

The installation was carried out in close cooperation with Westrup technician Carl Schaumann, who worked side by side with Kräuterwelt’s own team. This hands-on collaboration allowed the team to quickly learn the nuances of the equipment, ensuring a smooth commissioning and seamless start-up.

The new line has completely transformed our processing capabilities. It’s exactly what we envisioned.” – Carsten Graf

Today, Kräuterwelt operates a state-of-the-art processing line that not only meets current production demands but also provides the flexibility to expand into new herbs and seeds in the future. The project underscores Westrup’s expertise in designing custom processing solutions and the value of strong, collaborative partnerships in achieving ambitious production goals.
